It was almost a clean sweep for Ángel Bastardo in Miami's Class 1 World Powerboat race. Nine of the top ten belonged to his new suite of acquired racers. Each boat had twin turbo engines clocking a max. speed of 160mph - and they were a sight to behold at full flight. Yet, one boat still finished ahead of them and Bastardo knew it was a message sent from the shores south of Florida. Adorned in Colombian national colours, the man disembarking the winning powerboat was instantly recognisable to the gathering Florida crowd. His hair, swagger and flamboyance was something Bastardo had not seen for many years…a timeless throwback to 1990s Major League Soccer: Carlos Valderrama. Sent by Hugo Ojeda to become Bastardo's Assistant Head Coach, he came with the fastest powerboat on the planet. The boat’s name: 'The Snake of Sinaloa'.
Hours later that evening, Carlos Valderrama dined with Bastardo over a meal in one of Florida’s Palm Beach luxury hotel accommodation. Unapologetic in his mission to both act as surveillance over Bastardo and as an Assistant Head Coach to Inter Miami, there was also one other purpose of his two-year stay in Florida…
"Your job is to clean the money that Don Ojeda sends you, and I am here to make sure you do it amigo. Real estate, gambling…anything that removes any trail back to our operations in Colombia and Mexico. The Snake of Sinaloa is just the start, a further five powerboats are in production which will be integrated into your fleet. We are expected to make regular trips back and forth to Barranquilla"
There was no point in disputing: “Libertad was a myth” something his legal advisor, Natasha Sibiski, had already made it clear to Bastardo when arranging his release with Major League Soccer. Bastardo was a free man in jail, but a prisoner in Miami. Turning to his drink, a freshly prepared espresso martini fizzing with the froth of a coffee hit, Bastardo leaned forward to whisper:
"Tell me how it really is with Hugo these days. How did things end with you and Junior Club?" Bastardo enquired.
The pause was noticeable, and the angst in Carlos' expression visible. He covered his mouth with his hand, to avoid detection from any potential moles within the terraced restaurant’s staff.
"The boy you left in Mexico is dead, patron. Barranquilla football worked for a time, but not anymore. Hugo walked away from it all, and when a man turns his back on football you know he is lost”
The Colombian’s tone shifted. No longer solemn, his words became forceful and sharp…
“Hugo Ojeda is the most successful trafficker in the history of all the Americas, and he rules through fear. He has my family in his sights amigo. One wrong step from me, and it's them who pay the ultimate price. One wrong step from you, and it’s them who pay the ultimate price. There is no Libertad".
Bastardo took time to take stock of what he'd created, and the mess he and Carlos Valderrama now found themselves in. Operational Isabella was Bastardo’s grand plan, but it was never meant to go this way. Hugo Ojeda should never have rose this high, but neither Argentine or Colombian could work their way out of this one just yet. At this moment in time, the only threat to Hugo Ojeda was from Hugo Ojeda himself.
Raising his glass towards his new Assistant Head Coach, Ángel Bastardo made a toast with a cold and emotionless stare back at his terrified guest: "To Libertad then".
Notes from the Editor - This was short wasn’t it? I only wanted to write a little piece on how and why Carlos Valderrama has ended up back on US soil. He is here to make sure the cogs keep turning for Hugo Ojeda, once again football acts as the public facing façade for what goes on behind the scenes: money laundering. We’re also starting to see rising tension between Bastardo-Ojeda. The landscape has changed for Bastardo and freedom now comes at a cost, but is it worth it?
La Plata: Vice continues each week as part of The MLS Save over on Twitch. Both Chris (FMEadster) and I play slowly, but we’ll most likely be looking to save update this side of Christmas for a more regular FM Blog. A lot has happened, and continues to happen, in what is turning out to be an eventful save. Everybody is welcome to check in and say hi from time-to-time,
